When foods containing carbohydrates (such as sugars and starches) are left on the teeth, tooth decay can result. These foods are altered by bacteria that typically reside in the mouth, creating acids. Plaque, which adheres to the teeth, is a substance made of bacteria, food, acid, and saliva. Cavities develop over time as a result of the acids the bacteria produce eating away at the tooth enamel. In addition to having an impact on our health, tooth decay can be excruciatingly painful.

There are a few simple things you can do to help prevent cavities, even though brushing and flossing are two of the most essential daily habits for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

  1. Brush Teeth at Least Twice per Day
  2. Don’t Forget to Floss
